Microsuction ear wax removal
Microsuction is the safest and most effective method of ear wax removal, and it’s the one we use most often at Alto Hearing. The procedure is quick, comfortable, and carried out by fully qualified hearing specialists.
We use the latest endoscopic microsuction technology, which provides a clear, magnified view of the ear canal during treatment. This allows us to remove excess ear wax with precision, using a gentle suction tube to clear the blockage safely and effectively.
Ear irrigation
Ear irrigation, sometimes called ear syringing or ear cleaning, is a gentle and effective way to remove softer ear wax. The process uses a controlled flow of warm water or saline solution to safely flush wax from the ear canal.
During treatment, a low-pressure jet of water is directed into the ear to loosen and clear the blockage. The water and wax are collected in a small basin, leaving your ears feeling clean and comfortable.

Frequently asked questions
If your ears are feeling blocked, itchy, or uncomfortable, or if you are struggling to hear, it may be that you have a build-up of impacted ear wax requiring professional ear wax removal.
Professional ear wax removal is safe and generally pain free, although some individuals may experience mild discomfort or pressure during the procedure.
When performed by an appropriately trained professional, microsuction is generally accepted as the safest and most effective method of ear wax removal.
Ear irrigation is also a gentle and effective way to remove softer ear wax and uses warm water to clean your ears. Controlled pressure gently and safely pulses water into your ears, allowing safe and comfortable ear cleaning.
Our fully qualified ear wax removal professionals are trained to minimise any discomfort and always ensure a gentle and safe ear wax removal process.
Ear irrigation is sometimes referred to as ear syringing, however, ear syringing is a different, outdated procedure. Unlike ear irrigation, ear syringing uses water pressure that isn’t safely controlled. This poses a greater risk of perforating an eardrum. Ear syringing is not used in any of our clinics.
The duration of an ear wax removal procedure can vary depending on the severity of the wax build-up and the techniques used.
You can usually expect the procedure to take between 15-30 minutes. However, it’s important to note that some cases may require multiple visits or additional treatments for complete removal.
Where additional ear wax removal treatments are needed, our follow-up appointments are free!
The cost of professional ear wax removal can vary depending on several factors, including the clinic, the complexity of the case, and any additional services required.
With many high street pharmacists and audiologists, such as Boots Hearing Care and Specsavers, as well as independent audiologists now offering ear wax removal, it’s best to contact the clinic directly to inquire about their pricing structure and any specific packages or discounts they may offer.
At Alto Hearing, ear wax removal is just £65 regardless of whether wax is found in one ear or both.
What’s more, your hearing check and follow-up appointment, where required, are included at no additional cost.
Where possible, we advise that you use olive oil spray for two to three days prior to your ear wax removal appointment. This should help soften any impacted ear wax.
Since 2018, NHS ear wax removal stopped being routinely provided by most NHS GP practices.
Where symptoms persist, or where ears are badly blocked, causing hearing loss, some GP practices may offer ear wax removal, however most will advise that you have to pay to have it performed privately.
