Treatment of tinnitus with Lenire
Find out more about our personalised tinnitus treatment plans with Lenire from Adam Bostock, Alto’s senior audiologist and director.
Lenire Tinnitus Treatment Device
Learn how Lenire uses sounds and electrical stimulation to help you pay less attention to your tinnitus, reducing its impact on your day-to-day life.
The Lenire device
Lenire comprises of a tonguetip that sits comfortably in the closed mouth and delivers mild electrical pulses to the tongue. This is combined with Bluetooth headphones that play customised sounds to activate the auditory nerve to the brain.
A lightweight handheld device controls the timing and intensity of the treatment, with the settings customised by our specialist audiologist to suit your tinnitus.

How Lenrie works
Lenire uses bimodal neuromodulation to reduce the severity of tinnitus symptoms. The mild electrical pulses delivered to the tongue, combined with the customised sounds played through headphones, drive long-term changes or neuroplasticity in the brain.
The sounds and electrical stimulation work together to retrain your brain. You pay less attention to your tinnitus, thus, reducing its impact on your day-to-day life.

Lenire tinnitus treatment plan FAQs
Lenire has the potential to provide relief for many people who experience tinnitus, whether you experience tinnitus as buzzing, ringing, or something else entirely.
Whilst Lenire is suitable for most adults with subjective chronic tinnitus (persistent tinnitus without an identifiable external source), individuals are assessed on a case-by-case basis by our specialist audiologist. This is to ensure there are no contraindications and that the Lenire device is the most appropriate treatment for you.
Lenire is not suitable for individuals who:
- Have active medical implants (e.g., pacemakers).
- Experience certain tongue sensitivities or injuries.
- Are pregnant.
If you are considering Lenire, watch senior audiologist, Adam Bostock explain who is a good candidate for Lenire, who might not be suitable, and the factors we carefully consider here at Alto.
The cost of tinnitus treatment with Lenire can vary. Pricing is dependent on your region, provider, and additional tinnitus management recommendations.
At Alto Hearing & Tinnitus Specialists, our Lenire treatment plans are £3,695, and this includes the Lenire device and ongoing support. Please see full details of what’s included below.
It’s also worth noting that the Tonguetip®, a key component of the Lenire device, is designed for 180 hours of use and will need to be replaced periodically at an additional cost of £210 per tip.
At Alto, our Lenire treatment plans include:
- The Lenire device, which comprises of a set of Bluetooth wireless headphones, a Tonguetip® proprietary intra-oral device, and a lightweight handheld controller, and comes with a 3-year warranty.
- Custom Lenire device setup, fitting, and calibration.
- A tailored Lenire treatment plan and your first treatment session, which is supervised in clinic by our specialist audiologist.
- Follow-up patient progress assessments and device adjustments, as needed.
- Advice and support for continued independent use of the Lenire device at home.
Lenire should be used for two 30-minute sessions daily for a treatment period advised by your provider.
At Alto, our specialist will specify this as part of your tailored Lenire treatment plan, and this will include your follow-up appointments to ensure you are getting the best results.
At the end of your recommended treatment period, you will get advice about continued, independent use of your Lenire device from home.
For best results, we always advise that Lenire is used for the full treatment period, even if positive short-term results are achieved.
Lenire’s bimodal neuromodulation delivers mild electrical pulses to the tongue, combined with sound played through headphones, to drive changes in the brain to reduce tinnitus severity.
Learn more about how Lenire works to provide relief from tinnitus.
No, Lenire is not painful at all. You may experience a mild tingling sensation on your tongue, that can be likened to popping candy, dependent on how the device is set up.
More than 500 people participated in two large-scale clinical trials which showed that Lenire can reduce the severity of tinnitus symptoms.
What’s more, an independent analysis of real-world patients from Germany, published in early 2022, showed results consistent with the clinical trials after six to 12 weeks of treatment.

Lenire can provide long-term relief for many tinnitus cases.
Clinical trials have found that 95% of participants reported improvement using Lenrie in just 12-weeks.
What’s more, 91% of compliant participants had continued improvement in tinnitus severity when evaluated at 12-months post-treatment.

If you’re considering Lenire, start by booking an assessment with our specialists. Our team will guide you through the process, ensuring you receive a treatment plan tailored to your individual needs.
Lenire has been extensively tested in clinical trials and real-world studies, and there is no evidence to suggest that it causes a permanent worsening of tinnitus.
However, some patients may experience temporary fluctuations in their tinnitus, including short-term increases in loudness, particularly in the early stages of treatment. This is a normal response as the brain adapts to the bimodal neuromodulation therapy.
In clinical trials, these fluctuations typically settled over time, and the majority of patients reported meaningful improvements in their tinnitus symptoms with continued use.
Should a patient experiences persistent discomfort, their audiologist can adjust the settings or explore other management strategies.
Lenire is generally well tolerated but, like any medical device, some users may experience mild side effects.
The most common side effects reported in clinical trials include:
- A mild tingling sensation on the tongue from the electrical stimulation, which usually becomes less noticeable over time.
- Temporary fluctuations in tinnitus loudness, which typically resolve as the brain adjusts.
- Occasional slight numbness of the tongue, which can be resolved by lowering the stimulation intensity.
These side effects are typically mild and temporary. If a patient has any concerns, they can work with their audiologist to adjust the device settings for comfort.
We are delighted to be one of the first UK certified providers, and the only in the Midlands region able to offer treatment of tinnitus with Lenire.
