ReSound Nexia: hearing aid review

We published this first look at ReSound Nexia in October 2023, before its UK launch. It describes the features announced at that time, rather than a hands-on Alto review.

For the wider range and fitting options, see our ReSound hearing aids guide.

ReSound Nexia battery life

For rechargeable Nexia models, battery life depends on the hearing aid, fitting and amount of streaming. Follow the charging instructions for the exact model and charger. Nexia also includes models that use disposable batteries.

Nexia styles & colours

The Nexia yields ReSound’s smallest ever rechargeable, receiver in the ear (RIE, also known as receiver in the canal, or RIC) hearing aid. This is a design evolution from their larger Omnia RIC and MiniRIC units, providing a more streamlined rechargeable microRIE.

A smaller hearing aid still needs to be manageable. Inserting it, pressing the button and putting it in the charger are worth checking with the person who will wear it.

The microRIE includes tap control for answering calls when used with a compatible phone and setup. This feature should not be assumed for every Nexia style.

We’ve seen this feature before, with other manufacturers such as Phonak and Unitron, and it’s these small yet impactful features that we find can often greatly enhance the user experience.

The original launch included rechargeable microRIE and disposable-battery RIE models. ReSound now also lists behind-the-ear and custom in-the-ear Nexia styles.

Colour options and wireless features vary by style. Check the exact model rather than treating the Nexia name as a single specification.

ReSound Nexia connectivity

Compatible Nexia models support Bluetooth LE Audio and Auracast. The ReSound TV Streamer+ uses Auracast to send television sound to compatible hearing aids at home.

For public broadcasts, the venue must provide a suitable Auracast stream and you need a supported way to join it. Our Auracast guide explains what works now and what to check.

Enhanced hearing in noise

ReSound describes Nexia’s combination of directional processing and all-around listening as a way to improve access to speech in noise. The benefit depends on the listening situation, hearing loss and fitting.

Excellent speech in noise performance is something we are used to with ReSound, with their ReSound One and Omnia platforms. Any further progression on this will be a very welcome addition.

CROS system

Nexia’s CROS system sends sound from an unaidable ear to a compatible hearing aid on the other side. An audiologist needs to assess whether CROS or BiCROS is appropriate and check the exact pairing.

Before Nexia, our CROS and BiCROS recommendations had to come from other manufacturers.

Considering ReSound Nexia now

Nexia is an older ReSound generation. This October 2023 first look records its launch features; it should not be read as a review of ReSound’s newest hearing aids.

If you are considering Nexia now, confirm the exact style, technology level, phone compatibility and support included before comparing it with other hearing aids.
