Premium hearing aids can be worth the extra cost when background noise makes conversation difficult. The additional processing can help speech stand out from competing voices and adjust as the sounds around you change. For someone struggling at family meals or in busy restaurants, those features are worth considering.
You might hear comfortably at home yet find yourself asking for repeats over dinner with friends. Perhaps you can follow the conversation, but feel worn out by the end of it. We want to understand both what you are missing and how much effort listening takes.
At Alto, we start with the conversations you want to hear better. Alongside your Complete Hearing Assessment, those details help us recommend a technology level and explain what the extra investment could give you.
What changes between basic, mid-range and premium hearing aids?
Manufacturers often offer several technology levels within the same hearing-aid range. They can share a case, charger and app, so two devices that look identical may have different abilities.
“Premium” describes the top technology level within a particular range. Brands use different names and numbers for their levels, so we compare the features of the exact models you are considering.
Following one person in a busy restaurant
Your partner is opposite you, while other conversations compete from either side. Directional microphones give more emphasis to sound from a particular direction. More advanced systems can narrow that focus or change it as the listening situation changes, helping the voice you want to hear stand out from the surrounding noise.
A narrow focus can be helpful when you are facing one speaker. Following several people around a table is a different task. Where people sit, how quickly the conversation moves and how the hearing aids respond all affect the result.
Moving between different kinds of conversation
You might walk into a café, speak to someone at the counter, then sit down with friends. Higher technology levels often distinguish between more listening situations and adjust the balance of microphone focus and noise reduction automatically. That can mean fewer occasions when you need to change a programme yourself.
Lower levels can also adjust automatically and manage noise. The range of situations they recognise and the processing available vary between models.
Making noise less wearing
Clattering crockery or wind across the microphones can make listening unpleasant. Features that soften those sounds may improve comfort. That is a different benefit from understanding more words, although both may matter to you.
When we review how you are getting on, we want to know whether you are following more of the conversation, whether the sound is comfortable and whether listening takes less effort.
Rechargeability and phone streaming are available at several price levels. You may be able to have both without choosing the top model.
Does AI make premium hearing aids worth it?
AI noise processing gives us another reason to look carefully at the higher technology levels. Some hearing aids use a deep neural network, or DNN, trained to recognise patterns in speech and noise. It processes the incoming sound to reduce competing noise while preserving speech. This can provide extra help in difficult conversations, alongside the directional microphones.
These features may be reserved for higher tiers or particular styles. For example, ReSound offers its Intelligent Focus noise-processing feature at Sensia levels 9 and 7 in the small rechargeable behind-the-ear model called microRIE. Level 9 also has Intelligent All-Around, which brings that processing into automatic operation. The extra spend can therefore change the noise processing available and when it switches on.
“AI hearing aid” is a broad label. AI can help a device recognise its surroundings and choose settings, or it can process speech and noise directly. Ask which function is included in the model you are considering, and whether it works automatically or needs you to select a programme.
If competing voices regularly leave you missing words, this extra processing is a good reason to explore the higher technology levels. We can explain which features are available in the models that suit your hearing and how you would use them.
When conversation gets more demanding
Extra technology can help as speech becomes harder to separate from other sounds. The situations that matter to you guide the choice.
Conversation at home
One nearby voice. Little competing sound.
Making speech audible
A café with a friend
One conversation among surrounding chatter.
Helping speech stand out
A lively family meal
Several voices. The speaker keeps changing.
Following the conversation
At every levelAccurate fitting and individual adjustment.
Where extra processing may helpMore demanding conversations can benefit from additional microphone control, automatic adaptation and, in some models, AI noise processing.
Does my lifestyle justify a premium hearing aid?
A list of how often you go out misses something important. Your weekly lunch with your daughter might matter more to you than all the other conversations you have that week. You should not have to describe yourself as “very active” for that difficulty to deserve attention.
Tell us about the occasions you want to hear better. Who are you trying to follow? Are several people talking? Is the person across a long table? Do you catch most of the words but feel worn out afterwards?
The case for premium is strongest when competing voices or changing surroundings make the conversations you value difficult. A lower or mid-level aid may meet your needs if those conversations are mainly one-to-one, with little competing sound. We can explain what each level would offer for the occasions you have described.
Tell us what you are comfortable spending. We can then discuss the trade-offs within that budget.
What can an assessment tell us?
The audiogram shows the softest sounds you can hear at different pitches. It does not fully explain why you can hear someone speaking but cannot follow what they are saying.
At Alto, speech-in-noise testing helps us investigate that difficulty. QuickSIN estimates how much more clearly speech needs to stand out from competing noise for you to understand it. Two people with similar audiograms can have different results.
We use the results alongside your account of everyday listening to recommend suitable hearing-aid features and consider accessories. QuickSIN helps us understand the difficulty; choosing a technology level also requires us to consider the situations you want to improve.
How will we know whether it is helping?
Choose a situation you want to improve before fitting. Following your partner in a busy café, for example, gives you something specific to discuss at follow-up. Were you asking for fewer repeats? Could you stay with the conversation for longer? Was the background sound more comfortable, but the words still difficult?
Those answers help us decide what to adjust and whether another approach is needed. A clinic demonstration can explain a feature, but your experience outside the appointment is essential to reviewing the result.
What does the price include beyond the hearing aids?
Comparing two technology levels at one clinic is different from comparing two clinics’ quotes. In the second case, the price may also reflect different amounts of clinical time, servicing and follow-up.
Accurate fitting helps you get the benefit of the technology you have chosen. At Alto, every treatment plan includes real-ear measurements. We use a small microphone in the ear canal to check the sound delivered by the hearing aid and adjust the fitting to your hearing.

Our hearing-aid treatment plans include the care around the devices. When comparing any quote, establish how long that care lasts, which aftercare appointments and support are included and what happens if you are still struggling. Our guides to UK hearing-aid prices and fitting and verification explain these separately.
Would an accessory help as well?
Across a long table, the speaker’s voice has travelled through the room and mixed with other conversations before it reaches your hearing aids. A compatible remote microphone worn by that person picks up their voice close to its source and sends it to the aids.
That can address distance more directly than a technology upgrade alone. It can also be used with premium hearing aids when their own microphones need extra help. At Alto, we consider aids and accessories together, using your lifestyle and speech-in-noise results to guide microphone recommendations.
A TV streamer may be more relevant if television is the main difficulty. Our hearing-aid accessories guide explains microphones, streamers and controls, including the compatibility checks each needs.
Would premium technology improve on my current hearing aids?
Tell us where your current hearing aids fall short. We can check your hearing, the condition of the devices and their fitting, then discuss what newer technology could offer. That helps establish whether an adjustment would solve the problem or an upgrade deserves consideration.
Newer premium hearing aids may offer noise processing or automatic features your current pair does not have. Those differences are worth exploring when you are still struggling in the situations they are intended to help with. In “Hearing Aids Have an iPhone Problem”, Adam explains why a new launch should prompt a discussion about what it would solve. Our guide to hearing-aid upgrades covers when replacement makes sense.
Can I buy a lower level and upgrade it later?
With some Unitron hearing aids, you can start at one technology level and pay to move up later, keeping the same devices. This is called FLEX:UPGRADE. If that flexibility matters to you, we can explain which models offer it and what an upgrade would cost.
With a fixed-level hearing aid, moving to a higher level means replacing the device. We will explain the options before you choose.
Choosing the right premium hearing aid
As an independent practice, Alto can compare hearing aids from different manufacturers. We will explain why we recommend a particular model and technology level for you. These questions are useful when discussing your options:
- Which of the situations I described would this higher level help with, and how?
- What extra help does this level offer over the next one down?
- Would an accessory help alongside these hearing aids?
- What care is included, and how will we review whether it is helping?
You should leave knowing what the extra money buys and where your audiologist expects you to notice it.
