Trying to follow one person in a busy room is more complicated than making speech louder. The person you want may be directly in front of you while another conversation behind you is louder.
ReSound Sensia hearing aids have been built around that problem. ReSound says the new system combines an environmental classifier, four-microphone directionality and deep neural network noise reduction to give more weight to the person the wearer faces.
It’s a useful idea, but a launch claim still needs scrutiny. We’ve looked at what GN has announced, how Sensia differs from other premium AI hearing aids, and what we would want to establish before recommending it.

What are ReSound Sensia hearing aids?
ReSound Sensia is GN’s new premium hearing-aid family for 2026. It introduces a brand new AI platform and a flagship listening mode called Intelligent All-Around.
ReSound’s existing hearing aids, Vivia, already use AI, directionality and noise management. Sensia goes further by combining three systems: AcoustIQ environmental classification, a four-microphone directional beamformer and deep neural network noise reduction.
When several people are talking, Sensia is designed to work out which voice is likely to matter from the direction the wearer is facing, rather than automatically chasing whichever voice happens to be loudest.
The intended-speaker processing is the part we want to test. Words such as AI and intelligent now appear across most premium hearing-aid launches. The question is what is it trying to achieve for the wearer?

The listening problem
The loudest voice is not always the one you want
Picture a table of six. You turn towards the person opposite, but somebody beside you has a louder voice. A hearing aid that simply gives priority to the strongest speech signal can make the wrong conversation clearer.
Sensia’s proposed answer is to use head orientation as part of the decision. Face the person you want and the system is designed to favour speech from that direction while reducing competing noise.
That will not remove every other sound, nor should it. People still need awareness of the room. The test is whether Sensia can make the chosen voice easier to follow without sounding narrow, artificial or unsettled when the wearer turns their head.

How ReSound says the system works
1. It reads the room
AcoustIQ classifies the acoustic environment and decides which processing features should be active.
2. It follows your attention
A four-microphone beamformer gives priority to speech from the direction the wearer faces.
3. It reduces competition
Deep neural network processing reduces surrounding noise so the intended voice is easier to separate.
One detail could easily be missed: GN says Intelligent All-Around is available only in the Technology Level 9 microRIE. The Sensia name will also appear on other technology levels and styles, but they will not all provide the same flagship processing.
What does GN’s evidence show?
GN’s launch material makes several strong claims. It describes Sensia as the world’s smallest AI hearing aid, says its environmental classification and feature engagement are 88% more accurate than the closest premium solution, and says its denoising is 17 times more efficient than other AI-powered systems.
GN also reports testing at Hörzentrum Oldenburg in which Sensia provided the best audibility of the intended speaker when that person was not the loudest speech source.
Those are manufacturer launch claims, not findings we can yet treat as a settled clinical verdict. The announcement names the researchers and studies behind them, but it does not provide enough detail about methods, participants or comparison settings for a full independent appraisal.
Laboratory evidence can tell us whether an algorithm behaves as designed. It cannot tell us whether every patient will prefer the sound or whether it will improve the particular rooms they find difficult. That needs a Complete Hearing Assessment, a carefully chosen fitting and proper follow-up.
Alto’s view: Sensia is interesting because it targets a recognisable listening failure. We are more interested in whether it keeps the chosen voice clear and natural than in the size of the AI claim.
Premium AI hearing aids
Is Sensia ReSound’s answer to Phonak Sphere?
ReSound Sensia, Phonak Audéo Sphere Infinio and Unitron Moxi S-R are part of the same premium generation: hearing aids using dedicated AI processing to separate speech from competing sound.
The stated emphasis is different. Phonak and Unitron put most of their attention on separating speech from noise across the environment. Sensia’s launch story is about identifying the voice the wearer has chosen by facing it.
Some people want maximum help in a noisy room without thinking about where they look. Others naturally turn towards the speaker and may value a system built around that behaviour. Sound preference, hearing results, ear shape, phone use and physical handling can all change the recommendation.

Battery life, styles and bimodal options
GN says the rechargeable Sensia microRIE and rechargeable in-the-canal or in-the-ear custom models provide up to 24 hours of battery life, including automatic deep neural network noise reduction. Actual use will vary with streaming, wireless accessories, battery age and the amount of demanding processing used during the day.
The announced family includes:
- rechargeable microRIE
- receiver-in-ear models using size 312 or 13 zinc-air batteries
- non-wireless completely-in-canal custom hearing aids
- wireless in-the-canal custom hearing aids
- rechargeable in-the-canal and in-the-ear custom hearing aids
ReSound Sensia Bimodal and ReSound Enzo IA Bimodal have also been designed to work alongside compatible Cochlear Nucleus sound processors. That is a significant part of the launch for people who use a cochlear implant on one side and a hearing aid on the other.
A wide range of styles does not mean every style offers the same features. If Intelligent All-Around is the reason you are considering Sensia, confirm the exact technology level and model in the written recommendation.

Who may benefit
Who might ReSound Sensia suit?
Sensia may be worth discussing if your biggest problem is following one person when several voices are present, especially if you already turn towards the speaker you want.
It may also appeal if you prefer automatic processing, already use ReSound’s app and wireless ecosystem, need a custom style, or use a compatible Cochlear Nucleus implant.
We would not choose it from that list alone. A recommendation should start with hearing levels, speech clarity, speech-in-noise testing, ear health, dexterity and the situations you most want to improve.
If another hearing aid gives you clearer speech, a more natural sound or easier handling, that is the better result regardless of which processor looks strongest on paper.

When will ReSound Sensia be available in the UK?
GN has announced that ReSound Sensia will be available from 20 August 2026 in the United States, Canada, Germany and Austria, with more markets to follow.
A UK release date and UK pricing have not yet been confirmed. We will update this article when GN publishes the UK range, technology levels and launch timing.

Sensia addresses a problem patients describe clearly: they can hear people talking, but the hearing aids do not always help with the person they actually want to follow.
Using the direction of attention is a sensible response. It also asks something of the wearer: face the person you want to hear. For many people that is natural. For someone who needs to follow speech from the side, moves constantly between speakers or cannot turn easily, the benefit may be different.
When Sensia reaches the UK (which will be very soon)we will want to assess more than speech audibility in a demonstration. We will listen for sound quality, check how reliably the processing follows conversation, test handling and connectivity, and verify the fitting against the prescription. People paying for premium hearing care need more than the newest processor. They need the right model, a measured fitting and access to adjustments once they have used it in ordinary life. That is why our hearing-aid treatment plans include ongoing clinical care.
We will update this launch analysis once we have UK details and direct clinical experience. Until then, Sensia looks promising for the right problem, but it has not made assessment or professional judgement any less important.
